Confluence – Office Connector – Doc Import Troubles

Posted by admin On January - 15 - 2009

Since about Confluence version 2.9 we’ve had problems when attempting to use the MS Word Doc Import feature of the Office Connector plugin. The process would fail with a Java NullPointerException, something like “java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.regex.Matcher.getTextLength(Unknown Source)”. We’ve done the upgrades to 2.10 and 2.10.1 hoping this would be resolved but to no avail.

Apparently we were not the only ones having this problem. There were other bug reports. We even opened a support ticket only to be told that there were already bug reports and to use those. (Hmmm….not the answer I was hoping for).

So, issue WORDDV-215 is the issue ticket that got the attention here recently. It was opened on 12/22/2008 and we now have a work around as of last night. Thanks to Ryan Ackley, who is now on the Atlassian team, and to Kirby for providing the DB backup that allowed Ryan to determine the problem and workaround.

I just tested the workaround and it works fine. Its really quite simple. Go into your Confluence Admin screen, navigate to the Office Connector Configuration and uncheck the box for “Warnings:”.

We look forward to the new release to fix the root issue but are very glad to have our Doc import working again.

Wow! Reading through, you certainly deal with a lot of different technologies. Thanks for sharing this work around as we had experienced the exact same problem. Now it works!
